Split Phase Systems

On some rural properties, especially farms, you may find split phase systems. These are installed when it's too costly to run a three phase supply but the property needs more power.

Split phase is a single phase supply at twice the normal voltage. The supply can consist of three wires, L1, L2, and neutral.

From either live wire to the neutral would be 230 volts nominal.
On a small installation it would be normal to use use only one live, this would be just like any other single phase installation.
For a larger load, it would be usual to divide it into two roughly equal parts, one on L1 and the other on L2.
In principle, loads designed for 460 volts could be connected between L1 and L2, though very little equipment is made for single phase 460 volt. Fronius used to supply a split phase inverter, but it's no longer available.

Spit phase is different to a property with a dual supply. A dual supply is simply two separate single phase supplies.

Inverter

You'll need to install two single phase inverters.
