Apply for a Graduate IT Support Engineer position

We're looking for a Graduate IT Support Engineer to join our young and vibrant IT team, helping to keep our systems running smoothly and users working happily.

You will work closely with our IT manager, wider IT team, and software developers to provide first-line helpdesk support, assist with system administration tasks, and contribute to basic software development and QA work on our industry-leading solar and heat pump design platforms, Easy PV and Heatpunk.

If you are interested in starting your IT career in a growing company that is working towards a future powered by renewable energy, we'd love to hear from you!

Starting salary will be around £30k, with some room for negotiation if much of the desirable skillset is already met, plus eligibility for the company profit share scheme and a free bag of organic veg each week.

About the role

This role is ideal for a communicative, motivated and enthusiastic graduate who wants to build a broad base of IT skills across helpdesk support, system administration and basic software development. You will gain exposure to a wide range of technologies while helping to ensure that hardware and software run smoothly for colleagues across the business. Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Serving as the first point of contact for internal IT support requests via email, phone or in person.
  • Logging, prioritising and resolving technical issues relating to hardware, software and networking.
  • Maintaining clear communication with users regarding the progress and resolution of tickets.
  • Escalating non-trivial issues to internal support, system administrators or software developers as appropriate.
  • Setting up laptops and phones for new users, utilising and improving existing scripts and systems.
  • Using our internal asset manager to keep track of device deployment.
  • Using monitoring tools such as Grafana to track server status and performance.
  • Writing, refining, debugging and using Ansible scripts for infrastructure-as-code deployment.
  • Assisting the IT manager in carrying out audits, passing cybersecurity audits and refining network infrastructure.
  • Performing troubleshooting and maintenance on internal servers.
  • Liaising with the product manager to assist in basic software changes to Easy PV and Heatpunk.
  • Carrying out QA of sites and features.
The role is based in our office in Milton, Cambridge. Due to the nature of the job, you will be expected to be in the office five days a week.

About us

Midsummer is a fast-growing company selling a range of renewable energy products to trade customers from our offices and warehouses in Cambridge, Glasgow and Dublin.

We sell solar PV systems, battery storage, electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps and a variety of associated products. We were recognised as the UK's best renewables distributor in 2020 and 2022, and Easy PV came out top (by a large margin!) in a LinkedIn poll for the most popular PV design software in the UK.

As an organisation, we have a strong environmental ethos and a passion for promoting the uptake of renewable energy, and our team share a belief in an open and honest approach to business.

About you

  • You are a charismatic individual who likes helping people and making things run smoothly.
  • You enjoy balancing a variety of responsibilities and wearing different hats as the situation demands.
  • You have excellent communication skills and are comfortable interacting with colleagues at all levels.
  • You pick up new technical skills quickly and have some coding experience in at least one language.
  • You can prioritise effectively, manage your time well, and have good common sense and an eye for detail.
  • You have a 2:1 or better in a STEM subject or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Any experience with Linux, SQL, containers, cloud infrastructure, Git, scripting, cybersecurity, or self-hosting is a bonus but not essential.

What we offer

You'll be joining a young, dynamic company with positive values that is aiming to position itself as the leading distributor of renewable energy systems in the UK. As a Graduate IT Support Engineer you will be assisting people across the entire company to work effectively, as well as being a direct assistant to the IT manager. This will be a challenging but fulfilling role and an excellent springboard into areas such as system administration, cybersecurity, network engineering, infrastructure, devops/techops or software development.

The position is based in our offices neighbouring Milton Country Park on the outskirts of Cambridge. Due to the nature of the job, it is expected that you be in the office 5 days a week. Working hours are 09:00–17:30 Monday to Thursday and 09:00–17:00 on Friday.

Starting salary will be around £30k, with some room for negotiation if much of the desirable skillset is already met. In addition to base salary we have a policy of sharing a proportion of the profits of the company amongst long-term employees.

You won't get a company car – we'd rather encourage people to get on their bike or take public transport. But you do get a free bag of delicious, fresh, locally-grown organic veg every week.

We are looking to hire as soon as possible: the sooner you can start, the better.

Please review the application pack and then complete the online application form. If you have any questions before applying, please email us at joe.clark@midsummerenergy.co.uk.
