Software Developer

We're looking for an experienced software engineer to join our expanding team and help us build the next generation of our Solar PV and Heat Pump design software.

If you are have previously worked in software development and are interested in a role in a growing company that is working towards a future powered by renewable energy, we'd love to hear from you!

This post is for people with a few (or many) years of coding experience under their belt. If you are just starting out in a coding career you might like to look at our graduate web developer role.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. We aim to be competitive.

About the role

You will join a small but expanding team developing the next generations of Easy PV and Heat Punk, our web tools for designing PV and Heat Pump systems. We are looking for people to fill both front-end and back-end roles, so depending on your strengths and on our needs you may get to work in any of the following areas.
  • Front end development. Our applications are built mainly in vanilla javascript, although we have a couple of exciting new projects where we are using React.
  • User interfaces. We pride ourselves on the ease of use of our software, and our design team are busy making it look great too. Crafting elegant, intuitive interfaces is an important part of making our tools successful.
  • Algorithms and deep logic. Some of what we do needs solutions to complex mathematical or logical problems. We get our heads deep into Rust and Web Assembly to write code to come up with efficient algorithms.
  • Back end and API development. As with any application we need to store and retrieve data in databases and filesystems, interact with external services and expose endpoints that our front end can interact with.
  • Internal systems. As well as Easy PV and Heat Punk, we have built many of the internal sales, order processing and accounting systems that the company uses. As we grow these need maintaining and developing further.
  • Customer projects. We have customised versions of Easy PV and Heat Punk for several big 6 energy companies, heat pump manufacturers and large installers.

The role is based in our offices in Milton, on the outskirts of Cambridge. You will be working primarily on Easy PV and Heat Punk, our web tools for designing PV and Heat Pump systems, and you might like to explore them before applying. It's free to create an account on both services.

About us

Midsummer is a fast-growing company selling a range of renewable energy products to trade customers from our offices and warehouses in Cambridge and Dublin.

We sell solar PV systems, battery storage, electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps and a variety of associated products. We were recognised as the UK's best renewables distributor in 2020 and 2022, and Easy PV came out top (by a large margin!) in a LinkedIn poll for the most popular PV design software in the UK.

As an organisation, we have a strong environmental ethos and a passion for promoting the uptake of renewable energy, and our team share a belief in an open and honest approach to business.

About you

You are a software developer with experience in writing modern web applications. You relish a challenge, and enjoy working in a team.

You are passionate about building a low-carbon energy system in the UK and you share our values around reducing consumption and building a fairer, more equitable world.

You have good interpersonal skills, and are good at both working in a team and in taking the initiative and achieving outcomes independently. You are keen to share your experience and help other members of the team develop through code reviews and mentoring. You present a friendly but professional face to both colleagues and customers.
