DIY SOS Build x BBC Children in Need Fund: The Joshua Tree

This year, DIY SOS partnered with the BBC Children in Need Fund to deliver a surprise build for The Joshua Tree, Cheshire. For those unfamiliar with the charity, The Joshua Tree provides invaluable care for children and families who have been affected by cancer. Founded in 2006, the tailored support that the charity offers has helped hundreds of families through the most challenging times over nearly 20 years. The Joshua Tree has expanded considerably since its inception and growing nationwide demand meant that as of early 2025 it had outgrown its original Cheshire base and desperately needed upsizing and upgrading to continue to offer its excellent support.
This is where DIY SOS and the 500-strong volunteer team comes in: together, over a time span of just 12 days, they completely renovated the charity’s home this September. The project doubled the capacity - the equivalent of adding four terraced houses! - and added state-of-the-art therapy suites, a fully equipped gym, and play and relaxation areas to support the children’s well-being. The speed of the project meant that disruption to the charity was minimised, and despite the gruelling period of long days there were only beaming faces amongst the volunteers.
Not only was the build focussed on expanding the charity’s space, but also considered the environment, relying on efficient and sustainable heat pumps for the heating system. Here at Midsummer we are thrilled to have been able to split the costs of donating a 200L All-in-one R290 hot water heat pump with the team from Becker and Wolf.
The CEO of The Joshua Tree said the work will have a “massive impact.” “It’s just amazing. We’re so grateful and it’s very heartwarming.” The charity aims to support as many families as possible, and this project that brought together volunteers from all over the country enables them to continue to do just that. We hope that the fantastic work that The Joshua Tree does is able to continue to reach more families in need, and are so happy to have been able to contribute in a small way ourselves.
The episode of DIY SOS will be aired on BBC One on November 13th for anyone who wants to see the outcome of the build!
